Hanukkah, also known as Chanukah, is a Jewish festival observed worldwide that recurs every year starting on the 25th day of Kislev. It commemorates the re-dedication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem following the Maccabean Revolt, which was led by Judah Maccabee against the Seleucid Empire. The festival celebrates a miracle where a small amount of consecrated olive oil lasted for eight days in the menorah, despite only being enough for one day. During Hanukkah, which lasts for eight days, Jews kindle the Hanukkah menorah, a nine-branched candelabrum, lighting one candle on the first night and adding an additional candle each subsequent night. Customs include eating foods fried in oil, such as potato pancakes and doughnuts, and playing with a dreidel. Although not mentioned in the Torah, Hanukkah is observed with various informal customs, and schools in Israel typically close for a week-long vacation during this time.
