Mothering Sunday, also known as Mother's Day, is observed in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Nigeria on the fourth Sunday in Lent. This holiday has its origins as a religious observance dating back to the 16th century when people would return to their mother church, the main church of their area. Although its customs declined after the Industrial Revolution, the celebration was revived during World War II when American soldiers introduced the secular Mother's Day from the United States. Today, many people honor their mothers by giving flowers or chocolates, and a notable tradition includes baking and eating simnel cake, which is also associated with Easter. The merging of secular and religious traditions has led to the common perception that Mothering Sunday and Mother's Day are the same celebration.
