National Miniature Golf Day, also known as National Minigolf Day, is observed annually on the second Saturday of May. The holiday celebrates the putting aspect of golf, which was initially developed as a women’s sport in the late 19th century to allow women to participate without swinging a golf club. The first putting course was established at the St Andrews Ladies Golf Club in Scotland in 1867. The sport gained popularity in the early 20th century, particularly in the United States, thanks to the invention of artificial putting greens by Thomas McCulloch Fairbairn in 1927. Although the popularity of minigolf declined during the Great Depression, it continued to thrive in Europe, leading to the formation of the Swedish Minigolf Federation in 1937. Participants celebrate by playing minigolf, learning the game, or sharing their experiences on social media using the hashtags #NationalMinigolfDay and #NationalMiniatureGolfDay. The inaugural celebration took place on May 12, 2007, and the holiday was officially recognized the following year.
