Second Sunday in July: Turkmen Melon Holiday (Turkmenistan)

Turkmen Melon Holiday, also known as Turkmen Melon Day, is observed in Turkmenistan every second Sunday of July. Established in 1994 by the first President of Turkmenistan, Saparmurat Niyazov, this official holiday celebrates the significance of muskmelons in the country's culture and history. Turkmenistan is renowned for its muskmelons, with approximately 400 of the world's 1600 melon varieties originating from the region, attributed to its ideal climatic conditions for melon cultivation. The holiday is marked by various festivities, particularly in the capital city of Ashgabat, where agricultural conferences, open-air fairs, tastings of different melon varieties, and cultural performances take place. The celebration coincides with the ripening season of the Vaharman melon, recognized as the sweetest variety.
