The Day of Geodesy and Cartography Workers is observed in Russia every second Sunday of March. This professional holiday was established by Presidential Decree on November 11, 2000, to honor employees in geodetic and cartographic services. The profession of cartographer began in Russia in March 1720, initiated by Peter I's order for the first cartographic survey, although printed maps date back to January 26, 1525, with the first printed map of Moscow lands. Significant advancements in geodesy and cartography occurred during the reigns of Nicholas I and Alexander II, and the United Geodetic Survey was founded in 1919, later becoming the Federal Service for Geodesy and Cartography of Russia in 1992. The holiday is celebrated in March due to the historical importance of this month in the field.
