Second Sunday of September: Primary Biliary Cholangitis Awareness Day or PBC Day

International PBC Day, also known as PBC Awareness Day, is observed worldwide every second Sunday of September. The day aims to increase awareness of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), an autoimmune disease that progressively destroys the small bile ducts in the liver. The first PBC Day was organized by the UK-based PBC Foundation in 2012. Activities on this day focus on combating the stigma associated with liver diseases and raising funds to support PBC patients and research. PBC primarily affects women, with symptoms that can include fatigue and itching, while treatment options like ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) are aimed at slowing disease progression. The renaming of the condition from primary biliary cirrhosis to primary biliary cholangitis in 2014 was intended to reduce stigma, as not all patients develop cirrhosis.
