National Sports Day is observed in Qatar every year on the second Tuesday of February. First held in 2012, this public holiday was established by an Emiri Decree issued by Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who has been a strong advocate for sports in the country. The day focuses on promoting a healthy lifestyle among the population through various public events and sports activities. All sports federations and clubs in Qatar are encouraged to host events to celebrate the significance of sports in fostering a physically and psychologically healthy community. Sheikh Tamim's efforts in sports include founding Qatar Sport Investments and chairing the organizing committee for the 15th Asian Games in Doha. Under his leadership, Qatar has also hosted significant sporting events like the 2014 FINA World Swimming Championships and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
