Second Weekend in June: Drink Chenin Day

International Drink Chenin Day, also known as Drink Chenin Blanc Day, is celebrated worldwide every second weekend of June to honor the Chenin blanc grape variety, which originated in France and is predominantly associated with the South African wine industry. This grape, believed to have originated in the 9th century in the Anjou region, was brought to South Africa in the 17th century by Dutch colonial administrator Jan van Riebeeck or possibly by Huguenots fleeing France. The inaugural celebration took place in the United States in 2014, with events promoting Chenin wines in various cities, and the holiday expanded internationally with participation from the Chenin Blanc Association in South Africa and wine producers in the Loire Valley and Australia. Celebrants are encouraged to enjoy Chenin blanc wines, whether by visiting wine bars, sharing bottles with friends, or attending tasting events, while promoting the holiday on social media with hashtags like #DrinkChenin and #DrinkCheninDay.
