National Day is observed in Gibraltar every September 10, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the first sovereignty referendum held in 1967, where voters chose to remain under British sovereignty. The first celebration took place in 1992, initiated by then Chief Minister Joe Bossano, and was officially recognized a year later due to its popularity among the people. The festivities begin with a children's fancy dress competition, followed by a street party featuring school choirs and the solemn presentation of the Gibraltar Medallion of Honor. A highlight of the celebration is the release of 30,000 red and white balloons from the Parliament building, alongside free music concerts, fairs, and a fireworks display, marking the vibrant spirit of the Gibraltarian community.
