Ruhnama Day is observed in Turkmenistan every September 12, commemorating the release of "Ruhnama" (The Book of the Soul) by former President Saparmurat Niyazov in 2001. The book serves as a combination of autobiography, revisionist history, and spiritual guidance, aimed at promoting Turkmen culture and Niyazov's ideologies. During Niyazov's presidency, the day was a significant public holiday, with knowledge of Ruhnama required for various educational and employment opportunities, including obtaining a driving license. Although the importance of Ruhnama has declined since Niyazov's successor, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, removed it from the list of public holidays, many people still observe the day.
