Munhumutapa Day is observed in Zimbabwe every September 15, commemorating President Emmerson Mnangagwa and honoring the legacy of the Mutapa Empire. Established in 2024, the holiday recognizes Mnangagwa for embodying the spirit of the great Munhumutapa rulers. The celebration is organized by the Zanu PF Youth League, the youth wing of the ruling party, and rotates among the ten provinces of Zimbabwe each year. The Mutapa Empire, founded around 1430 by warrior prince Nyatsimba Mutota, once spanned parts of present-day Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia. The holiday not only marks Mnangagwa's birthday but also serves to celebrate the historical significance of the empire, which became a Portuguese protectorate in 1629 before disintegrating in the mid-18th century.
