September 15: Silpa Bhirasri Day (Thailand)

Silpa Bhirasri Day is observed in Thailand every September 15 to honor Silpa Bhirasri, an influential sculptor regarded as the father of modern art in the country. Born Corrado Feroci in Italy in 1892, he was invited to Thailand in 1923 to teach Western sculpture and later founded the University of Fine Arts, now known as Silpakorn University. During World War II, he changed his name to avoid arrest by the Japanese army. Bhirasri designed notable monuments in Bangkok, such as the Victory Monument, Democracy Monument, and the Statue of King Rama I at Memorial Bridge. His significant contributions to Thai fine arts earned him the Most Noble Order of the Crown of Thailand posthumously, and his birthday was designated as a day of observance in his memory.
