September 17: Adoption Day

Adoption Day is observed in Ukraine every September 17, celebrating adoptive parents, foster parents, and guardians. Established by the third President of Ukraine, Viktor Yuschenko, the holiday was first celebrated in 2009 after being announced at the All-Ukrainian Forum of Adoptive Parents in Kiev. Initially held on September 30, the date was changed to September 17 in 2023 when the Orthodox Church of Ukraine switched to the Revised Julian calendar. The holiday emphasizes the social significance of adoption in ensuring every child's right to grow up in a family and recognizes the invaluable contributions of adoptive parents to society.
