World Prematurity Day (WPD) is observed worldwide every November 17 to address the global issue of preterm birth. The observance began in 2009 and has been celebrated as WPD since 2011, following the idea proposed at the first meeting of the European Parents' Organization in 2008. The day aims to educate the public about the challenges faced by preterm infants, who are born before 37 weeks of gestational age, and to highlight the prevention of preterm birth. Approximately 15 million babies are born preterm each year, with around one million not surviving. Various international, national, and local public health organizations participate by organizing events and activities to promote the campaign. Although not an official United Nations observance, WPD is actively supported by the World Health Organization.
