Rescuer's Day is observed in Ukraine every September 17 as an official professional holiday dedicated to the employees of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. Established in 1998 by President Leonid Kuchma, the holiday was initially celebrated on the last Saturday of October before being abolished in 2003 and re-established in 2008 with the current date. The choice of September 17 coincides with the Eastern Orthodox Church's honoring of the icon of Our Lady of the Burning Bush, which symbolizes protection for firefighters and rescuers. On this day, workers in emergency services, including fire service and search and rescue, receive congratulations and appreciation for their vital contributions. The holiday is marked by receptions, awards ceremonies, and other events, celebrating not only emergency service personnel but also citizens who have aided in managing the aftermath of industrial and natural disasters.
