Siquijor Day, or Araw ng Siquijor, is observed in the province of Siquijor, Philippines, every September 17. This special non-working holiday commemorates the province's founding anniversary, marking its establishment as an independent province on September 17, 1971. Siquijor, the third smallest province in the Philippines, is located on an island within the Negros Island Region. The island's name is believed to have originated from a local ruler's introduction, "Si Kihod," which the Spanish misinterpreted as the island's name. Historically, Siquijor was part of Bohol and later Negros Oriental before gaining independence. The celebration of Siquijor Day highlights the unique culture and history of the island, which was known as Isla del Fuego due to the abundance of fireflies in molave trees during the Spanish colonial period.
