The Day of Partisan Glory is observed in Ukraine every September 22 to honor the heroes of the Ukrainian resistance movement during the Second World War. Established in 2001 by President Leonid Kuchma, the day commemorates the contribution of Ukrainian partisans to the Allied victory. The movement began shortly after Nazi Germany's invasion on June 22, 1941, with the formation of partisan detachments in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions. Notably, one famous unit was led by Sydir Kovpak in Putyvl. The Ukrainian partisan movement consisted of about 220,000 fighters, with 95 individuals receiving the title Hero of the Soviet Union. The day is marked by official speeches and remembrance ceremonies across Ukraine, although it remains a working day.
