Bangladeshi Immigrant Day is observed in New York on September 25 each year to recognize the contributions of Bangladeshi Americans and commemorate Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic 1974 speech delivered in Bengali at the United Nations. This day was established in 2016 and highlights the significant increase in Bangladeshi immigration to the United States following Bangladesh's independence in 1971, aided by the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program. The day features an annual trade fair organized by Muktdhara New York and the USA-Bangladesh Business Link, in collaboration with the Greater New York Chamber of Commerce, aimed at strengthening business ties between the United States and Bangladesh while showcasing Bangladeshi culture. New York City hosts the largest Bangladeshi community in the U.S., primarily in neighborhoods of Queens, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Long Island. Notable Bangladeshi Americans from New York include rapper Anik Khan, media artist Hasan M. Elahi, and entrepreneur Kamal Quadir, among others.
