National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is observed in the United States every September 27. The day aims to highlight the disproportionate impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. Initially, the first cases of AIDS in the U.S. were reported among homosexual men, leading to the term “gay-related immune deficiency” (GRID).
Despite the understanding that HIV can affect anyone regardless of sexual orientation, gay and bisexual men continue to be a high-risk group, representing over half of those living with HIV while comprising only 2% of the U.S. population. The primary mode of HIV transmission in this group is unprotected anal sex, and many individuals are hesitant to seek health services due to stigma and discrimination. The day serves as a reminder of the importance of safe sex practices and regular testing.
