September 28: Poke Day

International Poke Day is observed worldwide every September 28, celebrating the Hawaiian dish poke, which consists of diced raw fish or seafood. The holiday honors poke's origins as a snack made by Hawaiian fishermen using cut-offs from their catch, seasoned with salt and spices. Poke gained popularity in its modern form around the 1970s, typically served as poke bowls featuring a base of rice topped with various seafood, vegetables, and sauces. The dish has become increasingly popular in mainland North America since the early 2010s and has spread globally. Celebrants can enjoy poke at restaurants, learn to make it at home with fresh fish, or host Hawaiian-themed gatherings. The day was created by Angela Wong, co-founder of Splash Poke in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Participants are encouraged to share photos of their poke bowls on social media using the hashtags #InternationalPokeDay and #PokeDay.
