Silent Movie Day is observed worldwide every September 29 to celebrate and enjoy silent movies, which are often considered a neglected art form. Established in 2021 by three film archivists, the holiday aims to highlight the importance of preserving silent films and to educate the public about their historical and cultural significance. Silent films, characterized by the absence of synchronized recorded sound, were typically accompanied by live music during screenings. The day features various events, including theatrical and virtual screenings of silent films and lectures, designed to dispel negative stereotypes surrounding this genre. Participants are encouraged to share their appreciation for silent cinema through social media, organize watch parties, or contribute to preservation projects. The holiday's name was changed in 2022 from National Silent Movie Day to reflect its global nature.
