Armed Forces Day is observed in Taiwan every September 3, commemorating the victory over Japan in World War II. This date marks the official end of the war, following Japan's surrender on August 15, 1945, and the signing of the official act on September 2, 1945. Initially proclaimed as Victory of War of Resistance against Japan Day, it was renamed Armed Forces Day in 1955. While it is not a public holiday, the Ministry of State Security decides annually if servicemen will have an official day off. Various events are organized at institutions, and schools may hold celebratory activities to honor the day. In mainland China, this date is recognized solely as Victory over Japan Day.
