Civil Aviation Day is observed in Tajikistan every September 3, celebrating the contributions of civil aviation employees, including pilots, flight attendants, and air traffic controllers. This holiday commemorates the first flight from Bukhara to Dushanbe, which took place on September 3, 1924, marking the early development of civil aviation in the country, even before road and rail transport. On this day, Tajikistani air carriers organize special events to honor their employees, presenting certificates for their contributions to civil aviation. The significance of air travel in Tajikistan is underscored by the mountainous landscape, which necessitated the establishment of air routes for connecting remote areas to the capital. The first airfield in Dushanbe, then known as Stalinabad, was constructed in the same year as the inaugural flight, and subsequent developments included the establishment of the Tajik Territorial Department of Civil Air Fleet in 1937 and the founding of the state airline, Tajik Air, in 1949.
