Rare Cancer Day is observed worldwide every September 30. Established by the NORD Rare Cancer Coalition, the day aims to highlight the challenges faced by individuals diagnosed with rare cancers and their families. There are over 100 types of cancer, with rare cancers defined as those affecting fewer than six people per 100,000 each year. Approximately one in four cancer diagnoses is a rare form, which often leads to misdiagnosis and limited treatment options due to insufficient research funding. The day advocates for increased research and funding to improve early detection and treatment of these cancers. It also addresses the emotional and social isolation experienced by patients, as they often struggle to find support communities.
