Recovery Day is observed in Canada every September 30 and is dedicated to individuals who have coped with drug, alcohol, and behavioral addictions, celebrating their achievements in long-term sobriety. The event was first held in Vancouver in 2012, following an official proclamation by Mayor Gregor Robinson, and has since expanded to include events in numerous cities across Canada. It was inspired by advocacy movements in the United States, particularly Recovery Month recognized by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Recovery Day events are primarily organized by volunteers and feature activities such as marches, community fairs, breakfasts, BBQs, live concerts, and speeches from local politicians and professionals. Former addicts share their personal stories to encourage others to embark on their recovery journeys. The main goals include fighting prejudice and stigma against addicts and demonstrating the potential for a productive and healthy life after addiction.
