National Day in Andorra is observed every September 8 to honor Our Lady of Meritxell, the patron saint of Andorra. This holiday commemorates a statue of the Virgin Mary, which dates back to the late 12th century. According to legend, the statue was discovered by villagers under a wild rose bush, and despite being taken to the church, it repeatedly reappeared at its original location. In 1972, the original statue was burned, but a replica now resides in the Meritxell Chapel, built in 1976. On this day, Andorrans enjoy a public holiday with various events and activities, and governmental offices are closed. The feast of Our Lady of Meritxell is a significant cultural celebration, reflecting the country’s heritage and traditions.
