The observance was created in 2016 by Wag!, a platform connecting dog owners with professional dog walkers, to recognize the hard work of these individuals who walk dogs in various weather conditions. On this day, dog owners are encouraged to express their gratitude by thanking their dog walkers and possibly offering an extra tip or small gift. The dog walking industry in the U.S. began developing in the 1960s, with Jim Buck being one of the first professional dog walkers in New York City. National Dog Walker Appreciation Day should not be confused with National Walk the Dog Day, which is celebrated on February 22 to promote longer walks for dogs.
