Kosrae Liberation Day is observed in the state of Kosrae, part of the Federated States of Micronesia, every September 8. This holiday commemorates the liberation of Kosrae from Japanese occupation, which occurred on September 8, 1945, following World War II. The celebrations include remembrance ceremonies honoring WWII victims, as well as singing, dancing, sporting competitions, and traditional foods such as taro, rice, chicken, pork, and seafood. Each town and village in Kosrae has its own unique traditions for celebrating the day. Kosrae Liberation Day was first observed in 1946 and has been celebrated annually since then, alongside other regional holidays like Kosrae Constitution Day and Gospel Day.
