The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrated worldwide on September 8, commemorates the birthday of Saint Mary, mother of Jesus. Although the exact date of her birth is unknown, this feast is traditionally observed nine months after the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. The celebration dates back to the 6th century, originating with a basilica dedicated to Mary's parents in Jerusalem. The Roman Catholic Church recognizes this as one of the few birth feasts, and it is also celebrated by most Christian churches today. In France, the day is known as Our Lady of the Grape Harvest, where winemakers bring their best grapes to be blessed and attach some to the statue of the Virgin Mary, culminating in a festival meal featuring newly harvested grapes. In Kerala, India, a predominantly Christian state, the Nativity of Mary is a major celebration observed for eight days.
