September 9: Day of the Victims of Holocaust and of Racial Violence (Slovakia)

The Day of the Victims of Holocaust and of Racial Violence is observed in Slovakia every September 9. This remembrance day commemorates the issuance of the Jewish Code on September 9, 1941, during World War II, when Slovakia was under Nazi occupation. The Jewish Code imposed severe restrictions on the Jewish population, including mandatory identification and bans on various professions and intermarriage. Following the implementation of this code, the deportation of Slovakian Jews to labor camps began, resulting in the murder of the majority of Slovakia's Jewish community under the regime of Vojtech Tuka and Jozef Tiso. The day was first observed in 2001 and is marked by solemn ceremonies, including the laying of wreaths at the Holocaust Memorial in Bratislava, attended by government officials and local Jewish community representatives.
