The International Day to Protect Education from Attack is observed worldwide on September 9 each year. Established in 2020, this UN international observance aims to emphasize the importance of ensuring access to education during humanitarian emergencies. The initiative, initiated by Qatar and supported by 62 UN member states, seeks to highlight the plight of over 75 million children aged 3 to 18 from 35 countries affected by crises. The resolution encourages governments to create safe educational environments and protect students and educators from attacks, particularly in areas of armed conflict. The day also addresses the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has disrupted education for many children globally. The Safe Schools Declaration, endorsed in 2015, further commits states to protect educational institutions during armed conflict.
