Independence Day in Tajikistan is observed nationwide every September 9, commemorating the country's independence from the Soviet Union, officially proclaimed on this date in 1991. The territory of present-day Tajikistan became part of the Russian Empire in the 19th century and was later incorporated into Uzbekistan as the Tajik Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in 1924, before becoming a separate Soviet republic in 1929. The day is marked by various celebrations, including solemn speeches, flag hoisting ceremonies, concerts, performances, exhibitions, street fairs, sporting competitions, and firework displays, with the main festivities taking place in the capital city of Dushanbe. While military parades and rallies are no longer part of the celebrations, the holiday remains a significant national event and a non-working day for the citizens of Tajikistan.
