August 16: Peace Day (Thailand)

Thai Peace Day, observed in Thailand every August 16, commemorates the end of hostilities in World War II and honors the members of the Free Thai Movement who aided the Allies against Japan. Established in 1995, the day follows the proclamation of Japan’s surrender on August 15, 1945. The Free Thai Movement, which included notable figures such as future prime ministers and members of the Thai royal family, played a significant role in resisting Japanese occupation during the war. Memorial ceremonies are held, attended by government officials, military representatives, foreign diplomats, and descendants of Free Thai Movement members. The observance serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the war and the importance of peace.
