International ShakeOut Day is observed worldwide every third Thursday of October as an earthquake preparedness campaign. Launched by the Earthquake Country Alliance (ECA), the event began in 2008 with The Great Southern California ShakeOut, which involved 5.3 million participants in earthquake drills across various settings. Since 2009, the ECA has designated this day for global participation in earthquake drills, teaching the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” technique, which is crucial for safety during an earthquake. Participants are encouraged to follow seven steps to enhance their earthquake preparedness, including securing their space, planning for emergencies, and organizing essential supplies. Individuals can get involved by participating in or organizing drills, ensuring personal preparedness, and sharing information on social media with the hashtag #InternationalShakeOutDay.
