Third Thursday in October: Spirit Day

Spirit Day is observed worldwide every third Thursday in October. Established in 2010 by Canadian teenager Brittany McMillan, who worked for GLAAD, the day aims to highlight the bullying of gay and lesbian teenagers, which contributes to numerous suicides each year. Participants are encouraged to wear purple, the color chosen for its representation in the LGBT flag, to show support for LGBT youth. Since its inception, the campaign has garnered support from various Hollywood celebrities, including Ellen DeGeneres and Hilary Clinton, and has expanded its reach over the years. Additionally, many websites participate by incorporating purple hues into their designs on this day.
