Cap Classique Day is observed in South Africa every September 1 to celebrate South African sparkling wines produced using the traditional method. This holiday was created by South African winemakers to promote Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) wines, which must meet specific quality standards, including a minimum aging period on the lees. The first MCC wines were produced in 1971 at Simonsig Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, initially using Chenin blanc grapes, though winemakers have since incorporated traditional Champagne varieties like Chardonnay and Pinot noir. To mark the occasion, wineries, restaurants, and distributors organize wine tastings, vineyard tours, and other events, making it a vibrant celebration of the arrival of spring in the Southern Hemisphere. Participants are encouraged to enjoy MCC wines and compare them with traditional method sparkling wines from other regions.
