Valencia Day, or DÃa de la Comunidad Valenciana, is observed in the Valencian Community of Spain every October 9. This holiday commemorates the 1238 reconquest of Valencia from the Moors by King James I of Aragon. Celebrations begin on the night of October 8 with a fireworks display, followed by a colorful procession in the provincial capital on the 9th. Events include a flower-laying ceremony at the statue of King James I, a Moors and Christians festival, and street parties throughout the community. Additionally, October 9 coincides with the feast day of Saint Denis of Paris, who is honored as the patron saint of lovers in Valencia, leading to the custom of giving marzipan pastries wrapped in silk scarves to loved ones.
