National Museum Day (Hari Museum Nasional) is observed in Indonesia every October 12, commemorating the anniversary of the first Indonesian Museum Conference held in Yogyakarta in October 1962. This day celebrates the country's museums and cultural institutions, including aquariums, botanical gardens, and zoos. Events are coordinated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology and typically include seminars, webinars, exhibitions, and book presentations, allowing museum professionals to share experiences and discuss important issues. The National Museum of Indonesia in Jakarta, regarded as the best museum in the country, has its roots in the Royal Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences established in 1778. Despite the growth in the number of museums from 26 in 1945 to 412 in 2015, many face challenges such as poorly arranged collections and insufficient funding. National Museum Day aims to encourage the public to visit museums more frequently to learn about Indonesia's rich heritage.
