December 1: Karakalpak Language Day (Uzbekistan)

Karakalpak Language Day is observed annually on December 1, primarily in Karakalpakstan, an autonomous republic within Uzbekistan, as well as among Karakalpaks worldwide. This day commemorates the declaration of Karakalpak as the official language of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. The celebration highlights the significance of the Karakalpak language, which belongs to the Kipchak—Nogai group of the Turkic language family and has over 580,000 speakers. The language has evolved through various scripts, originally written in Arabic, then Latin, and currently in Cyrillic, with a Latin-based alphabet adopted in 2016. Educational institutions, including primary and secondary schools in Karakalpakstan and courses at Karakalpak State University, teach the language, while the Najim Dawqaraev Institute of Language and Literature regulates it. The oldest Karakalpak newspaper, Erkin Qaraqalpaqstan, has been published since 1924, further promoting the language and culture.
