December 13: Martial Law Victims Remembrance Day (Poland)

Martial Law Victims Remembrance Day (Dzień Pamięci Ofiar Stanu Wojennego) is observed in Poland every December 13. This day was officially declared by a resolution of the Sejm in 2002 to honor the memory of those who were killed during the period of martial law imposed by the government led by General Wojciech Jaruzelski in 1981. The imposition of martial law aimed to suppress the opposition, resulting in the imprisonment of thousands of activists and the deaths of about 100 individuals during strikes and demonstrations. Although martial law was lifted in 1983, many political prisoners remained incarcerated until a general amnesty was enacted three years later. Following the fall of the communist regime, the parliament deemed the imposition of martial law unconstitutional. On this day, various commemorative activities take place to remember the victims of the military junta.
