The Battle of the Oranges is a renowned food fight held in the Northern Italian town of Ivrea, occurring over three days before the Catholic Lent season. This festive event commemorates the liberation of the Ivrean people from tyranny, symbolizing their spirit and victory. Participants are divided into two factions, representing the Ivrean people and the emperor's forces, with one group parading on foot and the other on traveling wagons. Residents throw oranges at each other, reenacting the historical revolt against the tyrant Raneri de Biandrate. The celebration, which has its roots in local legend and history, has evolved into a vibrant spectacle that highlights community unity and pride. The first official Carnival of Ivrea took place in 1808, and the modern format was established after World War II.
