Christmas Island, an external territory of Australia, has a history rooted in phosphate mining, which was the primary economic activity until the mine's closure in 1987. The mine was later reopened in 1991, and today, the island is also recognized as an important eco-tourism center, with 63% of its territory designated as National Park.
