International Pompe Day is observed worldwide every April 15 to raise awareness of Pompe disease, a rare genetic disorder that primarily affects muscles, leading to progressive muscle weakness and various health complications. The day was established in 2014 by the International Pompe Association (IPA), which unites patient groups globally under the slogan “Together We Are Strong.” Pompe disease, also known as glycogen storage disease type II, results from the accumulation of glycogen due to insufficient amounts of the enzyme alpha-glucosidase. Symptoms vary based on the age of onset, with the most severe form, infantile-onset Pompe disease, manifesting in infancy and often resulting in fatality within the first year if untreated. The late-onset form progresses more slowly but still leads to significant health challenges. Activities on this day include educating others about the disease, donating to patient organizations, and sharing information on social media using the hashtag #InternationalPompeDay.
