Dushanbe Day, also known as Tajikistan Capital Day, is observed in Tajikistan every third Saturday of April. This official holiday celebrates Dushanbe, the capital and largest city of the country, which has a history dating back to the 17th century. Originally named "Kasabai Dushanbe," meaning "town on Monday," it was known for its bustling bazaar. The city became the capital of the Tajik Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in 1924 and was later renamed Stalinabad before reverting to Dushanbe in 1961. Present-day Dushanbe serves as the administrative, political, economic, and cultural center of Tajikistan, with notable sites including the National Museum of Tajikistan and the Dushanbe Flagpole. Celebrations typically feature sports competitions, fairs, concerts, and cultural events, including the annual Dushanbe Half-marathon.
