The Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Political Repressions in Ukraine is observed every third Sunday of May. Established in 2007 by President Viktor Yuschenko, this day honors those who were arrested and executed during the political repression campaigns in the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin. The main remembrance ceremony takes place at the Bykivnia Graves, a national historic memorial located on the outskirts of Kiev, which served as one of the execution and mass grave sites during the Stalinist repressions. This observance was originally part of a broader remembrance for famine victims, which was first recognized in 1998 and later split into two separate commemorations. The memorial at Bykivnia was opened in 1994, following Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union, and serves as a significant symbol of the tragic history of political repression in the country.
