Bittereinders Day is observed in the South African town of Orania every May 31. This annual holiday commemorates the Boer partisans who fought against the British Empire during the later stages of the Second Boer War. The day specifically honors those known as the Bittereinders, who were determined to continue fighting for independence despite the challenges they faced, including the British use of concentration camps. The war culminated in the signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging on May 31, 1902, marking the end of hostilities. In Orania, residents celebrate by remembering the sacrifices of the Boers who died in the struggle for independence, as well as the many who perished in concentration camps. Orania, founded by Afrikaners as a stronghold for their culture, does not observe South Africa's national holidays but instead has its own commemorations, including Bittereinders Day.
