Carolina Day is observed in South Carolina every June 28, commemorating the Battle of Sullivan’s Island, which marked the first decisive victory of the American Revolutionary War in the state. The battle, fought on June 28, 1776, near Charleston, saw American forces successfully defend a fort constructed from palmetto logs against a British naval assault. Following the victory, the fort was renamed Fort Moultrie in honor of Colonel William Moultrie, and the Liberty Flag, designed by him, became a symbol of South Carolina. The first celebration of what was initially known as Palmetto Day occurred in 1777, and the name "Carolina Day" was first recorded in 1875. Although the holiday has lost some popularity since the mid-20th century, local historical groups have worked to revive its observance. At noon on Carolina Day, "Three Blind Mice" is traditionally played at St. Michael’s Anglican Church in Charleston to mark the occasion.
