National Flitch Day is observed worldwide on July 19 and is dedicated to an ancient English custom that dates back to at least the 14th century. The tradition involves awarding a flitch, or slab, of bacon to married couples who can prove they have been loving and faithful for a year and a day without wishing to be single again. This was done through a mock trial conducted by monks, where couples had to demonstrate their commitment to each other. Although this practice was brought to America by English settlers, it did not last long. The flitch trials still occur in Great Dunmow, England, every four years on leap years, organized by the Dunmow Flitch Trials Committee, with a jury composed of six maidens and six bachelors. While National Flitch Day does not involve the trial itself, it serves as a reminder of this unique tradition.
