Aporagender is a non-binary gender identity that serves as an umbrella term for genders that are not male, female, or anything in between, yet convey a strong and specific sense of gender. Unlike agender individuals who may experience an absence of gender, aporagender individuals have a distinct gender identity that is separate from the traditional gender binary but still feels defined and strong. This identity is not a blend of male and female (as in androgynous identities) but stands alone with a unique gendered sense.

Javier always struggled with fitting into traditional or even non-binary gender categories. While they knew they didn’t identify as male or female, they also felt strongly that their identity wasn’t neutral or absent of gender like agender. One day, while attending an LGBTQ+ workshop, Javier came across the term aporagender. It was like a lightbulb moment. “This is what I am,” Javier realized. It wasn’t about blending or combining masculine and feminine traits, nor was it about being without gender. It was an independent, robust gender identity that defied conventional definitions. Sharing this realization with their friend Camila, Javier said, “I finally found a term that describes me. I’m not male, female, or in between, but I still feel this powerful sense of who I am.” Camila smiled and replied, “That makes so much sense for you.” Embracing aporagender gave Javier a sense of validation, helping them articulate their identity in a way that felt authentic and clear. This newfound understanding allowed Javier to express their gender without feeling pressured to conform to binary or even other non-binary expectations.
