Aromantic refers to individuals who experience little to no romantic attraction toward others. People who identify as aromantic may not have the desire to engage in traditional romantic relationships, though they can still form deep and meaningful connections in other ways, such as through friendships or familial bonds. Being aromantic does not necessarily affect other types of attraction, like sexual or platonic, meaning an individual can be aromantic and still experience sexual attraction or other types of affection. The term helps create a space for those who do not fit into societal norms around romance.

Mateo always felt a bit out of place when friends shared stories about their crushes and romantic dates. While he cherished the time he spent with friends and family, the idea of romance never resonated with him. He tried dating once, thinking it was just a matter of time before he felt the same spark that others described. But instead, he felt indifferent. One evening, after a heartfelt conversation with his friend Isabella, Mateo discovered the term aromantic. “That’s me,” he realized, relieved to find a word that described his experience. He explained to Isabella, “I don’t feel romance the way people talk about it. It’s just not there for me, but that doesn’t mean I don’t care deeply about people.” Embracing his identity as aromantic allowed Mateo to stop searching for feelings that didn’t exist and focus on the rich, fulfilling connections he had with friends and family. He felt more confident in expressing himself and navigating relationships in a way that felt true to him, without the pressure to conform to romantic expectations.
